Poonawatta The 1880 Shiraz is one of the last remaining vineyards of its era, and one of the oldest in Australia. Established in 1880, this small vineyard of weathered vines produces premium fruit with an exceptional heritage, where each vintage is a reflection of the season, underpinned by a foundation of quality and character formed over 140 years. The 1880 Shiraz is a living relic of Australia’s pioneering winemaking heritage.

"From drought to rain to more rain to drought! 2.6t picked 20 Apr, 3 of 7 barrels declassified. Bright crimson/purple. In that deceptive guise: full bodied and powerful, yet it's not obvious. The family blackberry base has juicy/spicy highlights, the tannins woven through the fruit and oak. Tasted not long after bottling, but makes light of it. For release '22, and regular customers will jump for it. The alcohol, incidentally, is perfect."

Very deep, dark, rich purple/red colour, with a bright, fresh, intense and deliciously appealing aroma of dark-berries, dark plums and subtle spices. It's full-bodied and rich, concentrated and dense, with great drive and beautifully sculpted structure. Very long finish, the tannins supple and running the full length of the palate. An outstanding young shiraz with huge potential.
