EAT, LIVE, LOVE with GUSTO!!, Yarra Valley / Heathcote, VIC

Gusto is the second label of Greenstone of Heathcote, Greenstone Vineyards began in 2003 as a 40 hectare property (20 Ha under vine) near the town of Heathcote in central Victoria.

Design-Energy-Pty-Ltd-Gusto6-scaled.jpg

A change of ownership in 2015 saw the acquisition and addition of a winery and vineyards in the Yarra Valley, the former site of Sticks/Yarra Ridge. This has provided a picturesque cellar door facility close to Melbourne, as well as plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and more. Production across the two sites is deceptively small, with the wines genuinely hand made and quality paramount.

From the get-go a first rate producer, the wine styles are across the board sophisticated, complex, and for want of a better descriptor, grown up – think fruit concentration with purity, texture, refinement and drive. Philosophy has always been to express well grown fruit from excellent sites, and with a broadening offering of wines , the future looks very bright for Greenstone.

Wairarapa, NZ          Winemaker – Paddy Borthwick

Proudly family owned, the Borthwick Vineyard is an established vineyard situated in Gladstone, the heart of the Wairarapa.

Producing quality wine for over a decade, Paddy, an experienced wine maker, has gained a reputation for producing consistently great wines.

The 27 hectares of vines bordering the Ruamahunga River in Gladstone, Wairarapa are on stony, free draining, alluvial soils, with a micro climate giving warm daily temperatures, cool nights and low rainfall; perfect conditions for producing distinctive, quality wines.

In line with the family’s legacy of international trade, 90 percent of the wine is exported around the world. Paddy believes in sustainability and best practice within a vineyard, developing an asset for generations to come.

Beechworth, Vic                   Vigneron – Mark Walpole

Mark Walpole is arguably one of Australia's greatest viticulturalists and his interest in cool climate viticulture led him from his home in the Ovens Valley to the elevated Beechworth plateau at the top of the Escarpment above the Murmungee basin.

The vineyard is situated on the Old Red Ordovician mudstone and shale soils which make up about half of the region’s vineyard sites, producing more tannic structured wines than from the granitic soils in the regions North. In 2009 he gained access to the Smith vineyard, located only a few minutes away from the Fighting Gully Road site. This small vineyard was planted to Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978, making it the oldest vineyard in the region.

Poonawatta Vineyard

Eden Valley, SA           Winemakers – Reid Bosward

There are three vineyards on the property, all dry grown. Poonawatta is Aboriginal and translates into good land. “Poona” meaning Good/ Healthy/ Fertile, “Watta” means persons’ land or country. Wines are made by Reid Bosward and Andrew Holt.

Poonawatta_Estate_1880_Shiraz_200331_1.jpg

"The ultimate lesson from Poonawatta is the sheer brilliance of the wines" - James Halliday

The 1880 vineyard produces extremely low yielding and high-quality Shiraz from just 912 vines. Next to this is the cuttings vineyard which was started in 1982 using 'cuttings' from the 1880 vines and at the top of the hill is the Eden Riesling vineyard which was planted in the 1970’s.

Goaty Hill Vineyard

Tamar Valley, Tas.              Winemaker – Jeremy Dineen

Goaty Hill Wines is a leading boutique family owned and operated vineyard. The grapes for the Goaty Hill Wine label are estate grown at their vineyard at Kayena (Tamar Valley) in the pristine cool climate island state of Tasmania.

The underlying philosophy at Goaty Hill Wines is that winemaking begins in the vineyard, long before the grapes are harvested. The family believes that superior grape growing diminishes the need for intervention by the winemaker and results in a wine that is grown, not made. Goaty Hill Wines specialises in Sparkling, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

La Ferme Du Mont

Lower Rhone Valley, France     Winemaker – Stephan Vedeau.

Run by the talented Stephane Vedeau, this is an up-and-coming estate. Across the board, the wines deliver fantastic quality and over-deliver; since 2007, they’ve been near the top of every vintage. In addition to superb Chateauneufs, don’t miss Vedeau’s Cotes du Rhones.

La Ferme du Mont, Première Côte 2015 – “Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Thick and sinewy – much, much more interesting than the average Côtes du Rhône! Lots of pace and interest here. Savoury, and really well made. Dramatically better than its class. Some quite assertive tannins as well as all that ripe fruit.” - Jancis Robertson

 Geographe, WA

Winemaker - Cathy Howard

Whicher Ridge is a genuine artisan wine producer growing and making small quantities of single variety, single vineyard, single region wines. Neil and Cathy Howard have been growing grapes and making wine for a collective 45 years.

The couple believe that a particular grape variety should be grown in a location that best suits that variety. Add to this philosophy, a very generous amount of passion for their vineyard and a dedication to handcrafting high quality wines using traditional winemaking practices, and you have Whicher Ridge Wines.
